Checkmate at the Raven’s Table
Thursday AI Art Inspiration — 29 October 2026
Every Thursday morning, Mr. Whitmore set up his chessboard outside the old apartment building.
He poured himself a cup of coffee, arranged the pieces, and waited.
At precisely nine o’clock, a large black crow landed on the opposite stool.
“You’re late, Edgar,” the old man grumbled.
The crow tilted his head.
“Caw!”
“Don’t give me that. You’ve been visiting the bakery again.”
From the windowsill above, a ginger cat named Marmalade watched with considerable interest.
The game began.
Whitmore moved his pawn.
Edgar studied the board, then carefully pushed his knight forward with his beak.
“Interesting move,” Whitmore muttered.
Twenty minutes passed.
The rain had stopped, the coffee had gone cold, and Whitmore was beginning to sweat.
“You’re cheating.”
Edgar blinked innocently.
“Don’t look at me like that! No ordinary crow understands the Sicilian Defence!”
Marmalade yawned.
Then, with the casual arrogance only a cat could possess, he stretched one paw towards the board and knocked over the white king.
“CHECKMATE!” croaked Edgar.
Whitmore stared.
“That doesn’t count! The cat interfered!”
Edgar hopped triumphantly onto the table.
And then something extraordinary happened.
“Actually,” said the crow in perfect English, “I’ve been letting you win for the past six months.”
Whitmore nearly dropped his coffee.
“You can TALK?”
“Of course. But you never asked.”
The old man sat speechless.
“And another thing,” Edgar continued. “Your coffee is terrible.”
From the windowsill came a lazy voice.
“I’ve been telling him that for years.”
Whitmore slowly turned towards Marmalade.
“YOU TOO?”
The cat stretched, closed his eyes, and purred.
“Naturally. Now, if you two are finished arguing, someone needs to open my tin of tuna.”
Whitmore looked from the crow to the cat.
Then he looked at his coffee.
“I really must stop buying that cheap brand.”
Edgar shook his feathers.
“Same time next Thursday?”
Whitmore sighed.
“Only if you promise not to cheat.”
The crow grinned.
“Certainly.”
Marmalade opened one eye.
“He’s lying.”
And somewhere above the quiet street, the church clock struck ten.
For the first time in forty years, Mr. Whitmore wondered whether he was the cleverest creature at his own chess table.
He wasn’t.
Not even close.
