The Night Nobody Remembered
September 1926.
The Cabaret & Speakeasy was the most fashionable establishment in town.
It was also illegal.
Which made it considerably more popular.
At precisely eleven o’clock, a mysterious woman entered wearing a black feathered dress, a diamond necklace, and a smile that suggested she knew everyone’s secrets.
She ordered champagne.
Then she approached the poker table.
“Gentlemen, may I join you?”
The men exchanged amused glances.
Twenty minutes later, she had won three hundred dollars, a gold pocket watch, and the deed to a small hotel.
“Another round?” she asked sweetly.
Nobody answered.
Across the room, the band struck up a lively tune.
The woman rose, slipped the hotel deed into her handbag, and headed for the dance floor.
That was when the lights went out.
A scream.
Breaking glass.
Someone shouted, “POLICE!”
When the lights returned, the woman had vanished.
So had the diamond necklace.
And the hotel deed.
The police searched the entire establishment.
They found illegal liquor, several terrified politicians, and a gentleman hiding inside a grandfather clock.
But no mysterious woman.
By morning, the newspapers were calling it the greatest robbery of the decade.
Nobody could explain how she had escaped.
Nobody, that is, except the elderly cleaning lady who arrived at six.
She swept the dance floor, emptied the ashtrays, and collected a black feather from beneath the poker table.
Then she opened her handbag.
Inside lay a diamond necklace, a gold pocket watch, and the deed to a small hotel.
She smiled.
“Not bad for a Tuesday.”
Outside, a young policeman held the door open for her.
“Good morning, Mrs. Henderson.”
“Good morning, dear.”
“Anything interesting happen last night?”
She adjusted her spectacles.
“Nothing worth mentioning.”
And walked away.
Word count: approximately 300
