Your challenge for this week
I kept waiting for the light, not realizing I was the spark.

I Was the Spark
#missysmadchallenge
I kept waiting for the light,
not realizing I was the spark.
For years, I thought light was something that arrived.
A door would open.
An answer would come.
Someone would reach into the darkness, take my hand and say,
This way.
So I waited.
I waited for certainty before taking the first step.
For courage before speaking.
For permission before becoming who I already knew I was.
But darkness has a strange way of teaching you things.
Eventually, your eyes adjust.
You begin to notice the tiny lights you overlooked before.
The song you wrote when words were the only thing keeping you afloat.
The hand you reached toward someone else while your own was trembling.
The voice that said, This isn’t right, even when remaining silent would have been easier.
The morning you got up and tried again when nobody would have blamed you for staying down.
Tiny sparks.
I hadn’t recognised them because I was looking for lightning.
Something enormous.
Something undeniable.
Something bright enough to illuminate the entire road ahead.
But perhaps we aren’t supposed to see the whole road.
Perhaps sometimes we are only given enough light for the next step.
And sometimes—
we have to make that light ourselves.
I began looking backwards and realised something extraordinary.
Every darkness I thought I had crossed alone contained little pieces of me glowing along the way.
My words.
My music.
My stubbornness.
My love.
My anger when something mattered enough to fight for.
My refusal to stop asking questions simply because the answers were difficult.
Even my scars seemed different when I looked at them that way.
They weren’t evidence that darkness had won.
They were evidence that I had walked through it.
I had spent so much time waiting for someone to hand me a torch that I hadn’t noticed the matches in my own pocket.
So I struck one.
Then another.
A poem.
A song.
A voice.
A truth spoken aloud.
And suddenly I understood.
I don’t have to become the sun.
I don’t have to illuminate the entire world.
A spark is enough to begin.
One spark can light a candle.
One candle can help someone find another.
And before you know it, a darkness that once seemed endless has little points of light scattered everywhere.
Maybe that’s what hope really is.
Not waiting for morning.
Not pretending the night doesn’t exist.
But standing inside the darkness and saying,
I can still make light here.
All that time, I had been waiting for rescue.
Waiting for a sign.
Waiting for the light.
And then I looked at my own hands.
They were glowing.
I was the spark.
Perhaps I always had been. ✨
