After Closing

The flea-market owner switched off the lights at six.

“Goodnight, ladies,” he joked.

Forty-seven glass eyes watched him leave.

At midnight, the smallest doll opened hers.

“Is he gone?”

A head on the top shelf nodded.

One by one, porcelain faces turned toward the window.

Below them, the coloured bottles began to tremble.

By morning, everything was perfectly still again.

The owner unlocked the door and frowned.

Yesterday there had been forty-three dolls.

Today there were forty-four.

He picked up the unfamiliar one.

It wore tiny spectacles.

And around its neck hung a miniature copy of his shop key.

Upstairs, someone giggled.

Dang, I’d be freaking out. Time to install security cameras and see what’s going on.

Hahaha 😂 I’m not sure I’d want to see the security footage! Imagine checking it the next morning and discovering they’d all changed shelves… or were staring directly at the camera. 👀😂

Wise decision, Lisa. Some mysteries are better left unsolved. Just lock the door, walk away slowly… and whatever you do, don’t count the dolls again.

I suspect the shopkeeper is about to be replaced (cue sinister laugh).

😂😂 I think you might be right, James. Tomorrow there’ll be forty-five dolls on the shelf… and one of them will look suspiciously like the shopkeeper. Cue even more sinister laughter. 👀

I’m beginning to think you’re right, Neil 😂 Especially since nobody seems particularly concerned about where doll number 44 came from… I’d leave the keys on the counter and run!

Me too! I think they’re creepy enough in daylight. I definitely wouldn’t want to be there after closing to find out what they’re up to!

I liked the touch about 47 eyes (an odd number) but then I learned there were 43 dolls – that’s only one eye each on average. Well they do say dolls are creepy – you went with it!

😂😂 I’m impressed you actually did the maths! I certainly didn’t count the eyes or the dolls in the photo. 🤣 But considering this lot, I’m not asking what happened to the missing eyes either… 👀

Run and don’t look back! Although I fear it may already be too late… tomorrow there might be a very familiar-looking doll sitting on that shelf.
