Hold

This week, I learned what it means to hold.

We held the door against water.
Held buckets beneath a leaking sky.
Held each other when mud reached our ankles and the mountain reminded us who shapes the land.

But “hold” is not always about strength.

Sometimes it is about not letting go when everything feels uncertain.

I hold my husband’s hand — three years bedridden now — and I understand that holding is not dramatic. It is daily. Quiet. Repetitive. Devotional.

I hold my daughters in my voice when they feel numb.
I hold calm so they can borrow it.

The water came without asking.
It filled the hall, entered the bedroom, tested the roof.

And then — it pulled back.

We held the line long enough for it to retreat.

There is something powerful about that.

To hold is not to stop the storm.
It is to remain standing inside it.

To hold is to anchor when the ground shifts.
To hold is to refuse collapse.

This week I held doors.
I held towels.
I held fear.

But most of all —
I held faith that the water would not stay forever.

And it didn’t.

Oh Maggie, I am glad the water subsided, there is nothing worse than water being inside your house!
