What Does the Wind Know?

What does the wind know
that it keeps circling the same corner of my house
like a restless thought?

Does it lean against the shutters
because wood remembers hands
long after hands are gone?

When winter presses its pale mouth to the window,
is it asking to come in
or warning me to stay?

If silence pools on the kitchen table
like spilled milk,
who taught it to wait so patiently?

Do empty chairs rehearse our names
when the room goes dark,
their shadows stretching like unanswered letters?

Is love the warmth that lingers in a wool coat
after the body has left,
or the ache of cold returning?

When the sea folds itself again and again
against rock —
is it arguing, or practicing forgiveness?

Why does grief grow green
in the smallest cracks,
soft as moss, stubborn as memory?

And if the heart keeps knocking
from the inside,
who will open the door?

Oh my gosh. I cannot get enough of this poem. How amazing you wrote. And the perfect image, in the post and in the words. I adore this. And I choose this line as my fave:

“Is love the warmth that lingers in a wool coat
    after the body has left,
or the ache of cold returning?
” Ah, love! Ah, the poem. Thank you.

A delightful exploration of the wind, Maggie. I love the personification in this question in particular:

‘When winter presses its pale mouth to the window,
is it asking to come in
    or warning me to stay?’

    And these lines:

‘Is love the warmth that lingers in a wool coat
    after the body has left,
or the ache of cold returning?’
