PROMPT #452

We are focusing on FRACTIONS this week

Prompt 1 – Missing pieces One morning, the world breaks into fractions. Cities split into halves, conversations become quarter-truths, and people can only remember pieces of their lives. Your protagonist discovers that the missing pieces haven’t vanished; they’ve gone somewhere else.Explore what is lost, what is gained, and whether completeness is overrated.

PROMPT 2 – Inheritance We inherit fractions – one third of a song, half a secret, quarter of a map, one-sixth of a story. It is in our DNA. We spend the rest of our lives piecing together the fractions.Shared stories give an impetus, so give us yours. It might change my story in small, imperceptible ways.Choose any one of the above, and use it as a foundation for your piece. Let the imagination run as wild as it can, or find a baseline of facts hitherto ignored.

Reena’s Xploration Challenge #452

The Fractions We Carry

I inherited half a story
from people who never told the ending,
a quarter of a dream
from those who stopped believing,
and a third of a song
whose melody still follows me.

From Greece came ancient whispers,
mythology woven into my blood,
stories of gods and goddesses,
of Persephone rising from the darkness,
and the courage to begin again.

From Norway came the mountains,
the forests, the northern skies,
the sound of rain against the windows,
and the wisdom of generations
who understood that nature speaks
to those willing to listen.

But not every inheritance was beautiful.

Some pieces carried sorrow,
some held anger,
and others contained secrets
that should never have been kept.

I spent years trying to understand
why certain patterns repeated,
why love sometimes came with conditions,
and why silence could hurt
more than the loudest words.

Then I discovered something.

We are not obligated to pass on every fraction we inherit.

I could keep the music
and leave behind the shouting.
I could treasure the memories
without repeating the mistakes.
I could take the love I was given
and make it greater
for those who came after me.

And so I gave my children
pieces of my own story.

A little Norwegian stubbornness,
a touch of Greek fire,
a love for animals and nature,
the freedom to question,
and the courage to walk
their own paths.

Somewhere along the way,
I stopped searching
for the missing fractions.

I realised that life
was never meant to be
a perfectly completed puzzle.

We are made of fragments,
of beginnings without endings,
of broken promises and unexpected blessings,
of songs we remember
and voices we still miss.

And perhaps that is enough.

Because every generation
has the chance to take
the pieces it has inherited
and create something new.

I may have inherited fractions,
but the story I leave behind
will be entirely my own.
