FOWC With Fandango — Offensive

FOWC: Offensive

13 October 2026 | Acrostic poem

Opinions clash when truths are spoken,
Fearful hearts may leave words broken.
Freedom of speech carries responsibility,
Every voice deserves dignity.
Not every disagreement is an attack,
Sometimes truth is what others lack.
Injustice thrives when silence remains,
Voices of courage can break those chains.
Even when honesty causes offence,
Let kindness and truth be our defence.

Sometimes people find the truth offensive, not because it is cruel, but because it challenges what they believe.

Yet there is a difference between speaking honestly and deliberately causing harm. We can stand firmly for what we believe without losing our compassion.

Never confuse kindness with weakness, or silence with agreement.

Very true, good points in your acrostic.

I grew up in a household where disagreeing with my parents had the result that they treated like I was bad and something was wrong with me and I had to be controlled and pulled into line.

This treatment has definitely had a hangover effect in my adulthood so that I sometimes fear speaking up with my own perspective even if I often do it respectfully. Some people see disagreements as an affront to their personal identity rather than an opportunity to try to see beyond their own perspective. I can frequently see both sides of a disagreement though and don’t see why people often feel that have more power when they pick a side. It’s probably part of the reason us humans have the world in the state it’s in.

Thank you so much, Ali. 💜

I can relate to what you’re saying. Growing up, I also learned that speaking up or disagreeing with adults could have consequences.

And you’re absolutely right. Somewhere along the way, people seem to have forgotten that we can disagree without becoming enemies.

Being able to see both sides isn’t a weakness. It’s a strength. We don’t always have to pick a side, and we certainly don’t have to agree on everything to respect one another.

I wish more people understood that listening doesn’t mean surrendering your own beliefs.

Thank you for sharing something so personal. Sending you a big hug. 💜
