The Great Welly Disaster
Arthur considered himself a gardening whiz.
His roses were magnificent, his hedges perfectly trimmed, and his vegetable patch was the envy of the village.
Unfortunately, his garden gate had gone rather wonky.
“I’ll fix that in five minutes,” he announced.
His wife, Margaret, looked up from her tea.
“That’s what you said about the kitchen tap.”
“That was different.”
“Indeed. We needed a plumber and a new ceiling.”
Arthur ignored her.
Armed with a hammer, a screwdriver and considerable confidence, he marched outside.
Ten minutes later, Margaret heard a crash.
Then a shout.
Then a word unsuitable for polite conversation.
She hurried into the garden.
Arthur was standing in the flowerbed, one foot buried in mud, while the gate lay flat on the ground.
“Are you all right?”
“Perfectly!”
“Where’s your other welly?”
Arthur pointed towards the pond.
There, floating peacefully between two ducks, was his boot.
Margaret folded her arms.
“I thought you were fixing the gate.”
“I was!”
“And the boot?”
He sighed.
“Unexpected complications.”
Margaret took another sip of tea.
“Shall I call the carpenter?”
Arthur looked at the gate, the mud and his floating footwear.
“Perhaps.”
“And the plumber?”
“Why?”
“The kitchen tap is dripping again.”
Some people have green fingers.
Arthur apparently had two left feet — and only one boot.
