Three Things Challenge #MM572

Today’s three words:

STUN • STAUNCH • STROP!

Bella and the Great Sock Rebellion 🐾😂

There are certain rules in our house.

Coffee belongs to me.

The cats believe everything belongs to them.

And Bella believes that every sock ever manufactured is her personal property.

Especially the ones you’re currently wearing.

Bella is a staunch defender of her right to confiscate footwear.

She has never signed an agreement.

Never attended a meeting.

And certainly never accepted the concept of private ownership.

If a sock falls on the floor, it’s hers.

If a sock is left on a chair, it’s hers.

If a sock is still attached to someone’s foot…

Well, that’s merely a technical difficulty.

One morning, I discovered Bella sitting proudly in the middle of the living room with one of my socks hanging from her mouth.

“Bella.”

She looked at me.

“Give me the sock.”

Nothing.

“Bella, that’s mine.”

She tilted her head.

Apparently, we had a difference of opinion.

I approached.

She backed away.

I reached for the sock.

She ran.

And thus began the morning’s exercise programme.

Around the sofa.

Past the coffee table.

Through the hallway.

And back into the living room.

The cats watched with the detached amusement of spectators at a sporting event.

Finally, I managed to corner her.

“Right. Hand it over.”

Bella dropped the sock.

Victory!

Or so I thought.

Because the moment I picked it up, she threw an enormous strop.

She huffed.

She snorted.

She turned her back on me.

Then she marched to her bed and flopped down with the dramatic exhaustion of someone who had just suffered a terrible injustice.

I stared at her.

“You stole MY sock!”

She refused to acknowledge me.

“Bella?”

Nothing.

“Are you seriously sulking?”

One ear moved.

That was all.

I went into the kitchen and made coffee.

Five minutes later, I returned to find her sitting beside my shoes.

With the other sock.

I stopped.

She looked up.

And I swear she smiled.

It would stun any unsuspecting visitor to discover how much strategy can fit inside one little bulldog’s head.

Because Bella had worked something out.

If she stole one sock, I would chase her.

If she stole the other, I would chase her again.

And apparently, that was the entire point.

I sighed.

“Bella, I’m not playing this game.”

She wagged her tail.

I sat down.

She brought the sock closer.

I ignored her.

She dropped it at my feet.

Then she barked.

Once.

Very firmly.

Apparently, negotiations had broken down.

Some dogs fetch slippers for their owners.

Mine steals the socks and demands entertainment in exchange.

And somehow, I’m the one who ends up looking ridiculous.
