This week’s Thursday Inspiration post was conjured using Leonardo.ai at the behest of Domenico1234. It’s an image of the Statue of liberty taking a break to smoke a cigarette.

Lady Liberty’s Smoke Break 🗽

Thursday Inspiration with Fandango — 8 October 2026

Well, I suppose I might lose a few followers with this one. 🤭

But when I saw Fandango’s image of the Statue of Liberty sitting down for a cigarette, my first thought was:

I understand you, darling. Move over. I’m joining you.

I pulled up a chair, took out my cigarettes and lit one.

For a while, neither of us said anything.

We just sat there, watching the smoke curl towards the ceiling.

Finally, Lady Liberty sighed.

“Do you know how long I’ve been standing out there holding that bloody torch?”

“Since 1886,” I answered.

“Exactly! And have you seen the state of things lately?”

I took another drag.

“Believe me, love. I’ve noticed.”

She shook her crowned head.

“I was supposed to represent freedom. Hope. A place where people could dream of a better future.”

“And you still do,” I replied.

“Do I?”

There was something terribly sad about that question.

She looked down at the cigarette between her fingers.

“People keep talking about freedom,” she continued. “But sometimes I wonder whether they’ve forgotten what it actually means.”

“Freedom for whom?” I asked.

She looked at me.

“Precisely.”

We sat in silence again.

I thought about all the people who have fought to be heard. Those who have suffered injustice, those whose voices have been silenced, and those who are still struggling simply to live without fear.

I thought about women fighting for their rights, children caught in conflicts they never created, and people being judged for who they are, where they were born or what they believe.

Lady Liberty exhaled another cloud of smoke.

“They gave me a torch to light the way,” she said quietly. “Not to watch the world burn.”

I nodded.

“Sometimes I think humanity has forgotten that freedom comes with responsibility.”

“And compassion,” she added.

“And compassion.”

She leaned back against the wall.

“Do you know what frustrates me most?”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Only one thing? Darling, we’ve got all night.”

For the first time, she laughed.

“People think freedom means they can do whatever they want, regardless of whom they hurt.”

“Yes,” I answered. “But freedom without respect for others can become another form of oppression.”

She studied me for a moment.

“You’re rather outspoken, aren’t you?”

I smiled.

“I’ve been told.”

“Doesn’t that get you into trouble?”

“Occasionally.”

“And you keep speaking?”

“Of course. Silence never changed anything.”

She smiled.

“Perhaps we have something in common.”

I looked at her enormous crown.

“Well, apart from the fact that your headwear is considerably more impressive than mine.”

She laughed again.

For a moment, the weight of the world seemed a little lighter.

Then she glanced towards the window.

“Do you think there’s still hope?”

I put out my cigarette.

“Yes. Because for every person who spreads hatred, there are others offering kindness. For every voice trying to silence someone, another rises to speak. And for every injustice, there are people who refuse to look away.”

She considered my words.

“Even when it seems hopeless?”

“Especially then.”

Lady Liberty slowly stood, straightened her robe and adjusted her crown.

“Well,” she sighed, “I suppose I’d better get back to work.”

I looked up at her.

“Already? We haven’t even solved half the world’s problems!”

“Neither have they,” she replied, pointing towards the world outside.

I laughed.

She reached for her torch.

“One last question,” I said.

“Yes?”

“After all these years, do you still believe in humanity?”

She paused.

Then she smiled.

“I have to. Otherwise, why would I keep holding up the light?”

And with that, she walked back towards her pedestal.

I watched her go, finished my coffee and whispered:

“Keep that torch burning, darling. Some of us are still trying to find our way.”

A final thought

Perhaps the Statue of Liberty deserves a cigarette break.

Not because she has given up.

But because even the strongest symbols sometimes need a moment to gather their strength.

Freedom is not something we inherit once and can then forget about.

It is something we must continue to protect — not just for ourselves, but for one another.

And if standing up for human dignity, compassion and justice costs me a few followers…

Well, I suppose Lady Liberty and I will just have to share another coffee. ☕🗽💜
