The Promise the Wind Kept
#missysmadchallenge
She whispered a promise
the wind refused to carry away.
It was late.
The kind of night when the world becomes so quiet
you can hear your own thoughts breathing.
Above her, the stars scattered themselves across the darkness,
small points of light
in an impossibly large sky.
She had always believed
some promises needed witnesses.
So she chose the stars.
And the moon.
And the wind.
She closed her eyes.
For a moment, she could almost imagine
that distance didn’t exist.
That somewhere beyond everything she could see,
someone was listening.
“I won’t forget.”
The words were barely louder than her breath.
The wind moved through her hair,
but it didn’t take them.
So she tried again.
“I won’t stop remembering who you were.”
Still, the wind remained.
It curled around her
like it understood that these words
were not meant to disappear.
There were so many things she could have promised.
That she would never cry again.
That she would stop being angry.
That one day she would understand why some stories end
before we’re ready to close the book.
But those would have been promises
she couldn’t keep.
So she chose something simpler.
Something true.
“I will carry the good with me.”
The laughter.
The music.
The ridiculous moments that could still make her smile
when she least expected it.
The kindness.
The memories that belonged to life
rather than loss.
She would carry all of it.
Not as a weight.
Not as a chain tying her forever to yesterday.
But as a small light
she could place beside tomorrow.
Because remembering someone
doesn’t mean you have to remain frozen
in the moment you lost them.
Love should never become a prison.
It should become a lantern.
Something that illuminates the road ahead
while quietly reminding you
of the road already travelled.
She opened her eyes.
A cloud passed slowly across the moon.
The wind finally moved again,
rustling the leaves
and brushing softly against her face.
For just a second,
it felt almost like an answer.
She smiled.
Perhaps the wind hadn’t refused
to carry her promise away after all.
Perhaps it had simply decided
the promise belonged here.
In the trees.
Among the stars.
Inside every song that brought back a memory.
And somewhere deep within her own heart.
She whispered once more,
“I won’t forget.”
Then she turned towards home.
Behind her, the wind began to rise.
But the promise remained.
Some words are not meant to be carried away.
They are meant to be carried within us.
