Amy Versus the Adder 🐕🐍

Looking at this photograph of Amy at three months old, I probably should have known.

Rules were clearly optional.

Fear apparently didn’t exist.

And if there was something she wasn’t supposed to investigate, she would make it her personal mission to do exactly that.

I was pregnant with Alex at the time, and Maddie was still a baby. One day, we were going to my in-laws’ cabin.

There wasn’t a road all the way there, so we had to leave the car and walk the rest.

My husband went ahead carrying Maddie in her car-seat carrier, while I followed with Amy, the Basenji puppy we had kept from our first litter.

That was the plan.

A peaceful walk to the cabin.

Then Amy and I met a huggorm—an adder.

Talk about a shock.

I stopped.

Amy didn’t.

She immediately went into hunting mode.

Now, Basenjis are fearless little dogs with strong hunting instincts. Amy certainly hadn’t received the memo that she was only three months old.

She saw the snake and decided:

Must. Kill. Snake.

I tightened both hands around her lead and tried to pull her back.

Amy had other ideas.

She lunged toward it, absolutely determined to take on something that could seriously hurt her.

I could feel myself shake, knowing how dangerous one bite could be.

And there I was—pregnant with Alex, in a maternity dress, trying to restrain a tiny Basenji who apparently believed she was ten feet tall and invincible.

Eventually, I realised there was only one thing I could do.

I grabbed her and picked her up.

Amy was not impressed.

I had ruined her hunt.

She wriggled in my arms while I carried her away, probably wondering why her completely unreasonable human wouldn’t let her finish the job.

Okay, why isn’t one of this week’s words—but I guarantee it was going through her little head. 😂

We continued toward the cabin with Amy safely in my arms.

I was relieved.

Amy was probably sad.

And my husband was somewhere ahead with Maddie, presumably unaware that his pregnant wife had just wrestled a would-be snake assassin off the battlefield. 🤣

Was I brave?

I don’t know.

Sometimes you don’t have time to decide whether you’re brave.

You simply do what you must to keep those you love safe.

And perhaps that’s why I can smile about it now.

Although Di has given us one final Wordle word that presents a slight problem:

pants.

I wasn’t wearing any.

Before anyone gets a shock—😂—I was wearing a pregnancy dress!
