For dVerse Meeting the Bar — Five Leavings from Home
Home
Behind the green door, the kettle sings,
five cats negotiate the morning light.
Bella guards the threshold of our little world,
while mountains hold the silence in their palms,
and I have learned that roots can grow in sand.
North
The wind carries whispers of Norwegian rain,
of fjords that cradled my childhood dreams.
I left beneath a sky of winter stars,
but somewhere in the mountains of my memory,
a younger me still waits for spring.
East
Beyond the sea, my father’s shadow lengthens,
beside an empty chair beneath the Bulgarian sun.
Some distances cannot be measured in miles,
and every unanswered telephone
becomes a road I wish I could travel.
South
The desert opens like an ancient book,
its pages written in forgotten tongues.
I follow the footsteps of those who wandered,
until the wind erases every name
except the one my soul remembers.
West
The Atlantic gathers all my leavings,
carrying them towards the setting sun.
I stand where land surrenders to the ocean,
and understand that every road I’ve taken
has taught my heart another way of home.
