For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Melissa is our host.

Today our petite poems of exactly 44 words must include a word provided by your dVerse host, and today, that word begins with X, the first-ever quadrille word beginning with x: xenolith, a fragment of foreign rock trapped inside a larger igneous rock.

Quadrille #255: X marks the spot

Xenolith

I thought belonging
meant becoming one thing,
one place,
one stone.

Then I learned
how mountains remember:
carrying foreign pieces
without asking them to disappear.

Perhaps I am a xenolith—
an older landscape
held inside
the life I chose,
still carrying another home within.

I love your imagination on this one, Maggie! Some would believe that is true!

Thank you, Dwight! 💜 The meaning of xenolith immediately caught my imagination — something from one place carried within another felt like such a beautiful metaphor for the pieces of our past and our homes that we carry with us. I’m glad you enjoyed where my imagination took it!

A good close Maggie! We decide our life! It may not meet our aspirations but will eventually!

Thank you so much, Hank. 💜 I’m glad the ending spoke to you. I loved the idea of a xenolith as a metaphor — something from another place held within something new, without losing what it originally was. I think our lives can be a little like that too; we choose our paths, but we still carry pieces of where we came from. Thank you for your thoughtful words.

Your poem reminds me of an M. C. Escher painting.🥰

Thank you so much, Melissa! 💜 What a wonderful comparison — I hadn’t thought of M. C. Escher while writing it, but now that you’ve said it, I can see that idea of one world existing within another.
You gave my stone-loving imagination a wonderful word to play with!
Thank you for such an inspiring prompt.

      What a beautiful comment.

I have to admit, when I first saw xenolith as the prompt word, I wondered what on earth I was going to do with it!
Then the little stone took me somewhere completely unexpected. I’m so happy you enjoyed it.

I think we are individuals, but sometimes everyone rest blurs to a collective… love the thought you used.

Thank you, Björn. 💜 I love that thought — that we remain individuals even when, from a distance, we can appear to become part of a collective. Perhaps that is what fascinated me about the xenolith: it belongs to the larger stone now, but it never completely stops being itself.

Your xenolith quadrille touched me, Maggie, and I love the thought of being an ‘older landscape held inside the life I chose’.

I think this little quadrille unexpectedly became a continuation of Two Homes. That idea of an older landscape still living inside the life we chose seemed to fit the xenolith perfectly.
We can belong completely to where we are now without losing the places that helped shape us. I’m so glad it touched you.

I’m glad the ending spoke to you. Somewhere along the way, that little piece of foreign stone became much more than geology for me.

I love the way you put that, Reena — different landscapes. 💜 Each shaped by our own storms, seasons and journeys, yet neither measured by age. Thank you.
