After
There are photographs where we look as if nothing could ever fracture us. We lean toward each other with the certainty of people who believe time is loyal. Years later, I study those images and try to remember the warmth of that closeness. I remember the room, the music, the way light touched his hair. But the exact feeling blurs. Lips forget what they have kissed. The body keeps moving forward, even when the heart lingers behind. I used to think memory was a vault; now I know it is weather. It shifts, it softens, it erases sharp edges. What remains is not the kiss itself but the knowing that once, for a moment, I was chosen and I chose back.
