Your challenge for this week
A character discovers a locked box with their name on it — and the key is in someone else’s pocket.

A character discovers a locked box with their name on it — and the key is in someone else’s pocket.
The box arrived without explanation.
It wasn’t ornate. No jewels. No dramatic carvings.
Just a simple wooden chest, worn at the corners, my name burned into the lid as if it had always belonged there.
I knew it did.
The weight of it felt familiar — not heavy, but inevitable.
I searched the house for the key.
Checked drawers. Old coats. The places people hide things they aren’t ready to face.
Nothing.
Then I noticed him.
He stood too casually, one hand resting near his coat pocket, eyes carrying that quiet knowledge people pretend not to have.
“You have it,” I said.
The key wasn’t stolen. It wasn’t taken.
It had been given — slowly, over years.
Trust. Vulnerability. Pieces of myself I had placed into his hands without realizing they were turning into metal and teeth.
The box held everything I had locked away:
my voice,
my anger,
my softness,
my power.
And the truth was harder than the lock itself:
Some doors only open when we choose who we allow to hold the key.
He stepped forward.
The metal glinted between us.
And for the first time, I understood —
the box was never meant to trap me.
It was meant to show me who I trusted enough
to unlock myself.
