Your challenge for this week
“I didn’t expect the darkness to be kind.”

“I didn’t expect the darkness to be kind.”
But it was.
The first time I met the dark, I was only a toddler.
Too young to know fear the way adults define it.
Too young to question what couldn’t be explained.
I remember the quiet more than anything.
Not an absence — a presence.
A soft folding of the world, like a curtain being drawn, not shut but aside.
They were there.
My guides.
Not shadows, not shapes to fear — but something familiar, steady, warm.
I felt safe. I felt held. I felt… home.
The darkness didn’t threaten me.
It carried me.
As I grew older, people taught me that darkness was dangerous.
That it meant loss, endings, evil, or despair.
But my body remembered something different.
The dark is where the noise stops.
Where the veil thins.
Where truth doesn’t need words.
I’ve travelled through it many times since —
not escaping life,
but listening more closely to it.
Darkness isn’t always the absence of light.
Sometimes it’s the place where light learns to whisper.
And kindness?
I found it there first.
