Song theme: Cold

Song Lyric Sunday – “So Cold” by Ben Cocks

“So Cold” by Ben Cocks is one of those songs for me. I first heard it in connection with the TV series The Good Wife, a show I used to watch during a time when my life had already begun to change quietly and irrevocably.

Since my husband’s accident in 2023, he has been bedridden. Life slowed, then narrowed. Days blurred into nights, and the world I once moved through freely became smaller, quieter, colder. Watching The Good Wife was, in some strange way, an anchor — something familiar, structured, and steady when everything else felt uncertain.

“So Cold” resonates not because of winter or weather, but because of what cold really means when life turns upside down. It speaks to emotional isolation, exhaustion, and the invisible distance that can grow even when love is still present. The cold in this song is the kind that settles in slowly — the kind you carry rather than escape.

Written by Ben Cocks and featuring haunting vocals by Nikisha Reyes, the song is spare, atmospheric, and deeply human. It doesn’t dramatize pain; it sits with it. And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need — not answers, not resolution, just recognition.

For me, “So Cold” is tied to late evenings, dim light, and the quiet resilience required to keep going when life no longer looks the way you imagined. It reminds me that cold does not mean the absence of love — only that love is being asked to endure in a different way.

Lyrics

Oh, you can’t hear me cry
See my dreams all die
From where you’re standing
On your own
It’s so quiet here
And I feel so cold
This house no longer
Feels like home
Ooh, mm
Ooh, mm
Oh, when you told me you’d leave
I felt like I couldn’t breath
My aching body fell to the floor
Then I called you at home
You said that you weren’t alone
I should’ve known better
Now it hurts much more
Ooh, mm
Ooh, mm
You caused my heart to bleed and
You still owe me a reason
‘Cause I can’t figure out why
Why I’m alone and freezin’
While you’re in the bed that she’s in
And I’m just left alone to cry
Oh-whoa-oh
Oh-whoa-oh
Ah-yeah-ah-yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh-whoa-oh
Oh-whoa-oh
Ah-yeah-ah-yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh-whoa-oh
Oh-whoa-oh
Ah-yeah-ah-yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh-whoa-oh
Oh-whoa-oh
Ah-yeah-ah-yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
You caused my heart to bleed and (oh-whoa-oh)
You still owe me a reason (oh-whoa-oh)
‘Cause I can’t figure out why (ah-yeah-ah-yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
You caused my heart to bleed and (oh-whoa-oh)
You still owe me a reason (oh-whoa-oh)
‘Cause I can’t figure out why (ah-yeah-ah-yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Oh, you can’t hear me cry
See my dreams all die
From where your standing
On your own
It’s so quiet here and I feel so cold
This house no longer
Feels like home
