Bonfire Night • Guy Fawkes • Childhood Memory
~ Maggie • The Afterlove Voice 💫

Today is the 5th of November — Bonfire Night in the UK, or Guy Fawkes Night.
A celebration woven into British history, marking the failure of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605.
When I was very young — just three, almost four — my family lived in the UK.
I still remember the feeling of that night as vividly as if I were standing there now.
The air was cold, crisp, and full of scents: woodsmoke, fried dough, warm food from bustling market stalls. Children laughed, fireworks cracked and sparkled across the sky, and the whole town seemed to hum with excitement.
But inside me… something felt different.
I remember watching the bonfire, towering and alive — and seeing the “Guy,” the effigy of a man, placed on top. The townspeople were celebrating his execution.
My little heart couldn’t make sense of it.

I remember thinking: Why are we celebrating someone being hanged?
Even if he did something wrong… why burn him again?
I didn’t yet understand the history — the plot to kill King James I, the political fear, the complicated threads of betrayal and punishment. All I knew was that it felt sad.
At nearly four years old, my heart led before my body could understand.
And in that moment I learned that history — especially when told through spectacle — can be confusing, even frightening to a child.
Not everything adults call tradition feels gentle.
I suppose I’ve always been a sensitive soul — one foot in this world, one foot in the unseen.
I felt things deeply before anyone ever explained them. Maybe you did, too.
So today, I simply want to invite you — my readers — to reflect:
Do you have childhood memories that left you confused, frightened, or deeply struck by something adults treated as “normal?”
Festivals… rituals… stories… holidays?
What did your young heart know before words made sense?
Sometimes, our earliest memories reveal the shape of who we already were —
long before we understood why.
If you feel called, share your remembrance below.
I’d love to hear how your younger self experienced the world.
