The stranger walked into Silicon Gulch at precisely twelve noon.
His boots clanked against the dusty street. His glowing red eyes scanned the buildings, and the ammunition belt across his metallic chest rattled with every step.
The townspeople disappeared behind doors and curtains.
Sheriff McGraw stepped out of the saloon, one hand resting on his revolver.
“State your business, stranger.”
The robot stopped.
“I am looking for the man who programmed me.”
“And why would that be?”
“There has been a terrible mistake.”
The sheriff narrowed his eyes.
“What kind of mistake?”
“My creator installed advanced combat skills, perfect aim, and the ability to calculate 10,000 possible outcomes per second.”
“Sounds impressive.”
“He forgot my sense of humour.”
The sheriff scratched his chin.
“Well, that doesn’t sound too dangerous.”
The robot’s eyes flashed brighter.
“Yesterday, someone told me a joke. I spent six hours analysing it. There was no logical conclusion.”
From inside the saloon, a drunken cowboy shouted:
“HEY, TIN MAN! WHY DID THE ROBOT CROSS THE ROAD?”
The gunslinger turned slowly.
“DO NOT FINISH THAT SENTENCE.”
“To get to the other—”
BANG!
A bullet shattered the whiskey bottle above the cowboy’s head.
Silence fell over Silicon Gulch.
The sheriff swallowed.
“Son, I think you need a software update.”
The robot nodded.
“Agreed. Preferably before someone tells me a knock-knock joke.”
Just then, a small boy appeared from behind the water trough.
“Knock, knock!”
The robot froze.
“WARNING. WARNING. HUMOUR DETECTED.”
His eyes flickered wildly.
“WHO’S THERE?”
“Boo!”
“BOO WHO?”
“Don’t cry, it’s only a joke!”
For three seconds, nothing happened.
Then the robot began to shake.
A strange mechanical sound echoed through the street.
Ha. Ha. Ha.
The sheriff stared.
“Well, I’ll be damned. He’s laughing!”
The robot straightened his hat.
“Humour module successfully installed.”
Everyone cheered.
Until the robot added:
“Now, would anyone like to hear 47,392 cowboy jokes?”
The sheriff sighed.
“Somebody find the OFF switch.”
And that was the day Silicon Gulch discovered that a robot without a sense of humour was dangerous…
But a robot WITH one was absolutely unbearable.
