The Garden of Kindness

This week let’s write a poem with the words account, charity and garden in it. This is another of those prompts where I randomly choose three words from a list of the top 1000 words in the English language plus a few of my favorites.

The Garden of Kindness

If life were a garden,
what would we plant?

Would we count
the flowers we gathered,
or remember
the seeds we gave away?

Some people keep
an account
of every kindness,

every favour,
every helping hand,

as though love
were a debt
waiting to be repaid.

But charity
does not carry
a calculator.

It does not ask
what it will receive
in return.

It simply plants
another seed,

waters the thirsty earth,

and trusts
that somewhere,
someday,

something beautiful
will grow.

Not every flower
will bloom.

Not every seed
will survive.

Some gardens
will flourish
long after
the gardener is gone.

And perhaps
that is the greatest gift—

to leave behind
a little more beauty,
a little more kindness,

and a world
where someone else
can rest
beneath the shade
of a tree

they never had
to plant.
