The Viking and the Valise
Nobody questioned the enormous valise sitting in the hallway until Erik announced he was leaving.
“I’m going to live like a Viking!”
His wife looked up from her book.
“You’re going where?”
“Into the wilderness! Living off the land, embracing my ancestors!”
She shook her head.
“Erik, you complained yesterday because the Wi-Fi was slow.”
He gave a vehement protest.
“My ancestors survived freezing winters, crossed dangerous seas and conquered distant lands!”
“Yes, dear. And you nearly cried when the coffee machine broke.”
Undeterred, Erik grabbed his valise and marched towards the door.
“I’m leaving!”
“Fine. But what’s in the suitcase?”
He hesitated.
“Essential survival equipment.”
She opened it.
Inside were three woolly jumpers, slippers, a coffee maker, two packets of biscuits and a portable phone charger.
She raised an eyebrow.
“Very Viking.”
Erik straightened his shoulders.
“A warrior must be prepared.”
“Of course. Shall I order you a taxi to the wilderness?”
He considered this.
“Actually, could you drive me? It’s rather cold outside.”
Some Vikings conquered the seas.
Others couldn’t conquer a weekend without coffee and Wi-Fi.
