This week, the challenge is to ask: What’s next?

As much as we long to linger in the moment, the world is always moving, always turning, always shifting to the next moment, next memory, next challenge/opportunity.

This Friday, take one of the following prompts and in whatever form calls to you, write about what comes next.

A woman sits on a train platform, softly crying.

A half filled box of keepsakes lies sitting on the bed.

A letter lies waiting by an envelope not yet sealed

A spotlight shines on an empty stage

You look into the mirror and see your much older or much younger self

What Next?: Friday Challenge

When the Spotlight Remains

Great Minds Think – What Next? Friday Challenge

The theatre is silent.

Rows of empty seats stretch into the darkness.

The curtains are open.

And in the centre of the stage, a single spotlight shines.

But nobody is standing beneath it.

Once, there was laughter here.

Music.

A young man with a microphone, a smile, and dreams bigger than the stage itself.

Thousands of voices sang along with him.

Thousands of hands reached towards the lights.

And somewhere among those countless faces were people who would never meet him, yet somehow felt that his music understood them.

Then, one day, the music stopped.

At least, that was how it felt.

The stage was empty.

The microphone stood untouched.

And the silence seemed impossibly loud.

What next?

It’s such a small question.

Two words.

Yet sometimes they carry the weight of an entire lifetime.

What comes next when someone is gone?

What happens to the songs that haven’t been written?

The dreams that haven’t been lived?

The stories that will never be told?

For a while, perhaps we simply stand in the darkness, staring at the empty stage, wishing the spotlight would reveal the person we miss.

But time continues moving.

Even when we wish it wouldn’t.

The seasons change.

Birthdays come and go.

Another year passes.

And suddenly, almost without understanding how, we find ourselves approaching another anniversary.

Two years.

How can two years feel like yesterday and a lifetime at the same time?

I look towards that empty stage and think of Liam.

Not only of the artist the world knew, but of the human being behind the music.

A son.

A father.

A brother.

A friend.

A man whose life meant more than any headline could ever capture.

And I wonder what comes next.

Then, somewhere in the darkness, someone begins to sing.

Quietly at first.

A familiar melody.

Another voice joins.

Then another.

Until the theatre is no longer silent.

The stage remains empty, but the music fills every corner.

And I begin to understand.

The spotlight doesn’t have to illuminate a person to remind us that they were here.

Sometimes it illuminates a memory.

Sometimes a song.

Sometimes a heart that has found the courage to create something new.

Because grief does not always remain grief.

Sometimes it becomes poetry.

Sometimes it becomes music.

Sometimes it becomes a voice speaking for someone who can no longer speak for themselves.

And sometimes it becomes the simple decision to carry love forward instead of allowing loss to have the final word.

So, what next?

I cannot answer that for the whole world.

I can only answer for myself.

I will keep writing.

I will keep making music.

I will keep remembering.

And I will keep believing that the love we give and receive during our lives leaves echoes long after the final curtain falls.

The theatre grows quiet again.

The spotlight still shines.

The microphone waits.

And somewhere beyond the darkness, a melody continues.

The stage may be empty.

But the love never left.

n 22 September 2026, during the opening night of Niall Horan’s Dinner Party Live on Tour in Birmingham, Niall finished singing End of an Era. The lights dimmed, and a recording of Liam’s voice filled the arena.

Liam was reflecting on how extraordinary his journey with One Direction had been. Niall let his friend’s voice speak for itself.
