Three Things Challenge #MM573

Today’s three words:

TRIVIA • TESTY • TASTY!

The Pub Quiz Disaster 🍕😂

It all started with a perfectly innocent suggestion.

“Let’s go to the pub quiz tonight.”

I looked up from my coffee.

“A quiz?”

“Yes. General knowledge. Trivia. It’ll be fun.”

Now, I consider myself reasonably intelligent.

I’ve read books.

I’ve travelled.

I’ve survived raising five children.

Surely I could answer a few questions about geography and history.

How difficult could it be?

Famous last words.

😂

We arrived at a little pub where the tables were crowded with enthusiastic teams, notebooks and people who looked suspiciously well prepared.

Our team consisted of four people.

One claimed to know everything about history.

Another was supposedly brilliant at geography.

My husband volunteered for sports.

And I was assigned music.

Excellent.

Finally, something I could handle.

The first question arrived.

“What is the capital of Australia?”

“SYDNEY!” whispered our history expert.

“Canberra,” I replied.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Absolutely sure?”

“Unless they’ve moved it since breakfast.”

😂

Question two.

“How many hearts does an octopus have?”

“Eight!” announced the geography expert.

I stared at him.

“Why eight?”

“Eight arms.”

“That doesn’t mean it needs a heart for each one!”

He looked offended.

Apparently, logic was not welcome at our table.

By question six, the atmosphere was getting rather testy.

Our history expert was arguing with the geography expert.

My husband was questioning the quizmaster’s interpretation of a football question.

And I was wondering whether ordering another pizza might improve the situation.

Then came the music round.

Finally!

The quizmaster played five seconds of a song.

I recognised it immediately.

“Prince!”

Everyone turned towards me.

“Are you sure?”

I slowly lowered my pen.

“Please don’t start.”

😂😂

We managed three correct answers before the geography expert confidently identified Queen as ABBA.

At that point, I ordered dessert.

Because when civilisation begins collapsing around you, chocolate cake is always a sensible response.

The food, at least, was wonderfully tasty.

The pizza was delicious.

The cake was heavenly.

And the chips disappeared faster than our chances of winning.

Finally, the quizmaster announced the results.

“Last place…”

He paused dramatically.

Our team name followed.

Silence.

Then applause.

Not the triumphant kind.

The sympathetic kind.

We had managed to finish behind a team whose members admitted they’d guessed almost every answer.

My husband shook his head.

“We should have won.”

“Of course,” I replied.

“The questions were ridiculous.”

“Obviously.”

“The scoring was questionable.”

“Without a doubt.”

Then I picked up the last piece of chocolate cake.

“But look on the bright side.”

“What?”

“We may have lost the quiz, but we won at dinner.”

He sighed.

I smiled.

And then came the final insult.

The quizmaster approached our table.

“Congratulations! You’ve won the consolation prize.”

A voucher.

For next week’s pub quiz.

😂😂😂

Some people go to pub quizzes to prove how clever they are.

I apparently go to discover how many wrong answers four adults can produce before the chocolate cake arrives.

And next week?

I’m choosing the team.

Preferably one that knows an octopus has three hearts.

💜
