Tell us about your morning routine.

Well, that depends entirely on which day of the week we’re talking about. 😂

My mornings aren’t exactly what you’d find in one of those beautiful lifestyle videos where someone wakes up naturally, does yoga, prepares a colourful breakfast and peacefully watches the sunrise.

Although I do sometimes see the sunrise.

Usually because I’ve been awake since 5 AM!

Three days a week — Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday — my alarm goes off at five in the morning.

My husband has dialysis treatment at the hospital on those days, and I need to get him ready for the ambulance transport.

Since his accident in 2023, he has been bedridden and needs help with his daily care.

That means washing him, helping him get dressed and making sure everything is ready before the ambulance arrives.

But before I do anything…

COFFEE.

I’m sorry, but nobody should expect my brain to function properly at five in the morning without caffeine.

Even the coffee machine probably knows better than to ask me complicated questions at that hour.

Once I’ve had my first cup, I can start functioning like a reasonably normal human being.

Well…

Normal might be stretching it a little. 😂

On the other days, I can usually sleep approximately an hour longer.

Luxury!

An entire extra hour!

Who needs a five-star hotel when you can sleep until six?

And then there’s Sunday.

Ahhh, Sunday. 💜

My favourite day of the week.

Sunday has one very important household rule:

NOBODY WAKES MAGGIE UNLESS IT’S AN EMERGENCY!

🤣

No unnecessary questions.

No sudden announcements.

No asking where something is when you’ve already looked in precisely one place.

And absolutely no:

“Are you awake?”

Well, I am NOW!

Of course, real emergencies are different.

But otherwise, Sunday mornings are sacred.

Another important part of my morning routine is meditation.

Most mornings, I try to meditate before getting out of bed.

It’s my way of grounding myself, checking in with my body and finding a little inner peace before the day begins.

Some mornings I have enough time.

Other mornings, the alarm goes off and reality announces:

“Meditation cancelled. Dialysis transport approaching.”

On those days, I meditate later, after my husband has left for the hospital and my daughters have been driven to the school bus.

I enjoy those quiet moments when the house finally settles.

A little breathing.

A little grounding.

A chance to reconnect with myself.

And then comes another favourite part of my day.

Writing and music.

Sometimes I start writing poetry or working on a story.

Sometimes it’s song lyrics.

Sometimes I put on music and let my thoughts wander.

And sometimes I do both.

Music playing while I’m writing, with another cup of coffee somewhere nearby.

That’s when my creative mind begins waking up properly.

Of course, what I originally intended to write and what eventually appears on the page can be two completely different things.

I might begin with a simple WordPress prompt…

And somehow end up with a three-page story, a new song idea or an intergalactic conspiracy involving Fuerteventura.

Arena 51, anyone? 👽🤣🤣

But that’s the lovely thing about creativity.

You never quite know where it’s going to take you.

My morning routine isn’t always peaceful.

It isn’t always predictable.

Some mornings are exhausting before the day has even properly begun.

But I’ve learned to appreciate those little moments that belong to me.

A cup of coffee before the world wakes up.

A few minutes of meditation.

The quiet after everyone has left.

A song playing.

Words appearing on a page.

And the knowledge that even when life is busy, I can still find little spaces for myself.

Although, if WordPress wants to know my ideal morning routine…

Coffee, meditation, music, writing, and absolutely nobody asking me anything before I’m ready.

Especially on Sundays.

💜
