Today’s three words:

RUSTY • RUSE • ROULETTE!

The Lady Who Always Won at Roulette

Everyone at the retirement home thought Evelyn was a sweet, slightly forgetful old lady.

She wore knitted cardigans, drank tea from floral cups and complained that her knees were getting rusty.

Every Thursday, the residents gathered in the recreation room for games.

Bingo.

Cards.

And, once a month, a little roulette wheel with plastic chips and chocolate prizes.

Evelyn always won.

Not occasionally.

Not most of the time.

Always.

The other residents began to suspect something.

“It’s impossible,” whispered George, who had lost seventeen chocolate bars in three months.

“She’s cheating,” declared Margaret.

“Nonsense,” said Evelyn, smiling sweetly. “I’m simply lucky.”

But George wasn’t convinced.

One Thursday, he decided to investigate.

He watched Evelyn carefully.

She never touched the wheel.

Never moved the chips after placing her bets.

Never whispered to the person spinning it.

Yet somehow, the little ball always landed exactly where she wanted.

George leaned closer.

“What’s your secret?”

Evelyn winked.

“Wouldn’t you like to know?”

He spent the following week devising a plan.

He even borrowed a magnifying glass.

On Thursday evening, he arrived early and inspected the wheel.

Nothing suspicious.

He examined the table.

Nothing.

He checked beneath Evelyn’s chair.

A peppermint wrapper.

That was all.

The game began.

Evelyn placed her chip on red seventeen.

The wheel spun.

The ball bounced.

Red seventeen.

George nearly fell off his chair.

“HOW?”

Evelyn calmly collected her chocolate.

Then she leaned towards him.

“George, dear, would you fetch me a cup of tea?”

He sighed and disappeared into the kitchen.

And that was when Margaret noticed something.

Evelyn was laughing.

“What’s so funny?”

“Oh, nothing.”

“Evelyn…”

The old woman finally confessed.

The whole thing had been an elaborate ruse.

Years earlier, she’d worked in a casino.

She knew perfectly well that nobody could predict a fair roulette wheel every time.

But she also knew George was so competitive that he’d believe almost anything.

So she’d made a little arrangement with the activities coordinator.

Every time George played, the coordinator secretly awarded Evelyn the winning chocolate, regardless of where the ball landed.

The others had been in on it for weeks.

Except George.

When he returned with the tea, Evelyn was waiting.

“Thank you, dear.”

He narrowed his eyes.

“Why is everyone smiling?”

“No reason.”

Then Evelyn handed him a chocolate bar.

“Consolation prize.”

George looked around the room.

Realisation dawned.

“You’ve ALL been tricking me?”

The room erupted in laughter.

Evelyn raised her teacup.

“Darling, I may be eighty-seven, but my sense of mischief isn’t rusty yet.”

George shook his head.

“Next week, I’m choosing the game.”

“Wonderful,” Evelyn replied. “How about poker?”

George went pale.

Evelyn understood something that George overlooked: sometimes, the strongest trick is not controlling the game, but understanding the people playing it. George was so determined to discover how she always won that he never questioned the assumptions behind his own suspicions. A clever little story about competition, human psychology, and the danger of being so certain that we forget to examine what is actually happening. And that final suggestion of poker? Poor George never stood a chance! 😄

Thank you so much, Wahidullah! 💜😂 You’ve captured something wonderful about Evelyn. She knew George’s competitive nature better than he knew himself, and while he was busy investigating the roulette wheel, he completely overlooked the people around it! 🤣 Sometimes our own assumptions are the easiest things to fool. And as for poker… I suspect poor George would lose his entire chocolate collection before the first tea break!

Thank you for such a thoughtful and lovely comment. 💜
