For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Lillian is our host.

Lillian here, delighted to host our Tuesday Poetics.Sometimes life surprises you, right? I’ve “discovered” an 8-year-old boy from the Philippines who is quite an artist! When his father proudly showed me some of his son’s recent artwork, my jaw dropped. I was amazed by the vibrancy of colors he achieves with pastels and watercolors, as well as his artistic insights into the subjects themselves. I remember drawing stick figures at that age!So today, with permission of his parents and the young artist himself, I share with you four pieces of Azul’s amazing artwork. Your prompt for today is to write a poem inspired by one or more of Azul’s paintings/drawings shown below. Be sure to include the artwork in your post, as well as credit to Azul, the artist. I’ll be sharing your poems with Azul and his parents.

Introducing an Eight-Year-Old Artist!

The Tree That Holds the Sky

The tree does not ask
the daylight to stay.

It has watched enough sunsets
to know that leaving
is another kind of beginning.

Above its branches,
blue tumbles into violet,
violet melts into rose,
and tiny stars appear
like secrets someone scattered
across the sky.

The tree stands quietly,
painted dark against the colour,
holding its branches open
as though it could catch
the last pieces of evening.

Perhaps that is why
the sky becomes so beautiful
before the night—

because even darkness
deserves a little colour
on its way home.

And somewhere
between blue and pink,
between daylight and stars,

an eight-year-old hand
has found the place
where evening dreams.

Oh…..this is absolutely beautiful!!!! I have tears in my eyes. Azul’s mother and father will truly be touched by this poem inspired by Azul’s painting. THANK you so very much. The imagery, the colors, the reflection…and then ending with Azul. Beautiful!

Oh Lillian, thank you so much. 🥹💜
That means more than you know. Azul’s painting immediately drew me in — those beautiful colours, the bold tree and the way he captured that magical space between daylight and night. The poem really came from what he put onto the page. I hope Azul knows what a wonderful gift he has, and I hope he and his parents enjoy the poem. Please thank him for allowing us to be inspired by his art.

Oh, what a lovely thing to say! 🥹💜 Thank you so much. This one really belongs to Azul and his beautiful painting — he gave us the colours and the inspiration, and I simply followed where they led me.

the tree holding the sky is a great image, and the followthrough with the tree branches open, catching the last pieces of evening (i read last pieces of everything at first)

“the tree knows that leaving is another kind of beginning”. and in leaving leaves leaves to the wind

the stars as scattered secrets, oo that’s juicy!

and how perfect to honor the artist directly. well penned

Thank you so much! 💜 I love that you first read “the last pieces of evening” as “the last pieces of everything” — somehow that works beautifully too, and gives the image another layer I hadn’t intended.

And yes, leaving leaves leaves to the wind… I see what you did there! 😂

I’m especially glad you mentioned the scattered secrets and the ending. I wanted the poem to ultimately return to Azul, because without his wonderful colours and imagination, none of these words would have existed.
