The Hunch
The storm arrived just after midnight.
Rain hammered against the windows while a swollen stream rushed through the valley below.
Then came the sound.
Scratch.
I froze.
Scratch. Scratch.
Something was at the door.
Every sensible bit of me said not to open it, but curiosity has never been particularly interested in sensible advice.
I looked through the window.
Nothing.
Then the doorbell began to ring.
“Absolutely not,” I whispered.
I had a hunch that whatever stood outside wasn’t delivering a parcel.
Another scratch.
“Go away.”
Silence.
Then a voice from the other side said softly,
“I only want to show you something.”
Oh, wonderful.
Apparently the devil had discovered door-to-door sales.
😂
“Not interested.”
“What if I told you I could give you everything you ever wanted?”
Now that was tempting.
For approximately three seconds.
Then I remembered something life had taught me: anything promising everything usually wants something much more valuable in return.
I straightened my backbone.
“No.”
The wind screamed around the house.
For a moment, strange beings seemed to move among the shadows outside.
Then—
nothing.
The storm began to fade.
Morning slowly appeared beyond the mountains, and I opened the door.
There was nobody there.
Only a small black feather lying on the doorstep.
I picked it up and smiled.
Some people believe intuition is nothing more than imagination.
I don’t.
Sometimes that quiet voice inside knows exactly what our eyes cannot yet see.
And sometimes the smartest thing you can do when the devil knocks…
is leave him standing outside.
