According to My Offspring… 😂

One of the dangers of having children is that eventually they grow up.

This sounds obvious.

What nobody warns you about is that once they’re adults, they begin correcting your version of their childhood.

I was sitting with my offspring one day, reminiscing about family meals.

“You all ate almost everything when you were little,” I said.

Silence.

The kind of silence that should have warned me.

Then one of them said,

“Mum. No.”

“What?”

“I hated vegetables.”

“You ate vegetables.”

“Because you made me.”

“That still counts.”

Apparently it doesn’t.

😂

Then somebody mentioned olives.

“Oh, you loved olives!”

The reaction suggested I’d accused them of a serious crime.

“I HATED olives!”

“You did not.”

“I absolutely did.”

“But you ate them!”

“Because you kept putting them on my plate!”

At this point another one joined in.

“She used to tell us we’d like things when we were older.”

“Well?” I asked. “Do you like olives now?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

I smiled.

“Then I was right.”

“That is NOT the point.”

It was exactly the point.

😂

The conversation continued.

Apparently, according to my children, several events I remember as lovely family moments were actually traumatic experiences involving vegetables, early bedtimes and being told to tidy bedrooms.

Who knew?

Finally, I held up my hands.

“Okay, okay. You may all submit your complaints in writing.”

“Is there a deadline?”

“Yes. Yesterday.”

“Can we appeal?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m your mother and I control the historical archives.”

😂😂

That’s the funny thing about raising children.

You spend years creating memories together, only to discover later that everyone was apparently living in a completely different version of the same household.

And somewhere between my memories and theirs probably lies the truth.

Although I’m still standing firm on the olives.

They ate them.

Case closed.
