Three Things Challenge #MM563

Today’s three words:

JAIL•JANITOR• JUMPY

When Justice Doesn’t Feel Like Celebration

For eight days, I watched a murder trial unfold live.

Some testimony made me angry.

Some made me incredibly sad.

And at times, I felt jumpy, waiting to hear what evidence or testimony would come next.

Yesterday, the jury returned.

Guilty.

Again.

And again.

Until all nine verdicts had been read.

There was a moment of relief.

Justice had spoken.

A man had been held accountable for the murder of his wife, Ashley.

Soon he will learn exactly how much of his future will be spent in jail.

But as I watched the courtroom, something stopped me from feeling that this was a moment to celebrate.

Her family was there.

They may finally have received the verdict they had been waiting for, but they still have to go home without her.

There are children who have lost their mother.

There are parents who have lost their daughter.

There are people who will carry an empty place at birthdays, Christmases and ordinary Sunday dinners for the rest of their lives.

No jury can change that.

No judge can change that.

And no janitor can come into a courtroom afterwards and simply sweep away everything that happened there.

Justice can hold someone accountable.

It can acknowledge a terrible wrong.

It can say publicly:

This happened. It mattered. And there are consequences.

But justice cannot undo.

Perhaps that’s why I felt both relieved and heartbroken yesterday.

I was glad the family received the verdict they had hoped for.

But my heart went out to them as they sat there listening to it.

Because behind every headline, every livestream and every courtroom case is something easy to forget:

There are real people left behind.

And sometimes justice isn’t something you celebrate.

Sometimes you simply hope it brings those people a little peace.

💜

Beautifully written, Maggie. Your words capture the difficult truth that justice may bring accountability, but it can never replace the person who was lost. Thinking of Ashley’s family and hoping this verdict brings them some measure of peace. 💜

Thank you so much. 💜 That was exactly what I struggled with while watching the verdict. I felt relief that there was accountability, but looking at Ashley’s family reminded me that there can never really be a “win” in something like this. They still leave the courtroom without her. I can only hope that having the truth acknowledged and justice served brings them some measure of peace as they move forward.
