The Castle Remembers

The tourists photographed the towers.

Anna photographed the flowers.

“Why those?” her grandson asked.

“Because buildings get remembered,” she said. “People don’t always.”

She touched one crimson petal.

Once, soldiers had marched through these gates. Children had played beneath these walls. Lovers had promised forever, and mothers had waited for footsteps that never returned.

Their names had faded from records, their voices from memory.

Yet every year, red flowers appeared beneath the ancient stone.

Her grandson raised his camera.

This time, he photographed them too.

“Do you think they know?”

Anna smiled.

“Perhaps that’s why they keep coming back.”

It would be really cool that after taking pictures of the flowers when they were looked at, the people appeared instead.

Beautifully written, Maggie. I love the thought that while names and voices may fade, nature somehow keeps their memory alive. The ending with her grandson photographing the flowers was especially touching. 🌹💜

Thank you so much 💜 That’s exactly what I hoped the story would convey — buildings may preserve history, but nature and the people who come after us can preserve something more personal. I loved the idea of the grandson seeing the flowers differently after listening to Anna. Perhaps remembrance itself is something we pass from one generation to the next.
