For dVerse Poets Pub, haibun Monday

For dVerse Poets Pub – Where Frank Tassone is our host.

Frank Tassone here, your host for today’s Haibun Monday, where we blend prose and haiku to fashion the poet Basho’s favorite form.

Today, let’s talk about vision! What does vision mean to you? Is it ordinary eyesight? Extraordinary perception? Is it the eagle’s glare, whether perched or in flight? Or a certain Marvel superhero? Whatever vision is for you, incarnate it in your haibun!

Haibun Monday 9-28-26: vision

The World in HD

For fifteen years, I looked at the world through the same kind of lenses. I managed, adjusted, moved things closer or farther away, and occasionally blamed the lighting. Then, in May, I finally changed to progressive glasses.

The first time I put them on, I laughed.

Apparently, someone had upgraded the world to HD.

Edges sharpened. Letters behaved themselves. Details I had stopped noticing quietly returned. Even the familiar seemed slightly new.

The greatest difference, though, has been in my writing. These days I spend hours moving between the screen, books, notes, and the world beyond my window. With progressive lenses, my eyes no longer have to fight quite so hard to follow wherever my words take me.

Vision is a curious thing. We rarely notice how gradually something has blurred until clarity is handed back to us.

And perhaps that is true beyond eyesight too.

Sometimes we need a different lens before we realise how much we have been missing.

I tried progressive glasses but I didn’t adjust to them. I’m glad they’re working well for you.

I too have what we in the UK call varifocals; although they take a lot of getting used to at first, once you’re used to them they are wonderful – as if someone has upgraded the world to HD! It’s the movement between ‘screen, books, notes, and the world beyond’ that makes all the difference. I love the haiku, Maggie!

Thank you so much, Kim! 💜😂 “Upgraded to HD” really is the best way I can describe it! I was surprised how quickly I got used to progressives, and now I wouldn’t want to go back. With all the writing I do, constantly moving between screens, notes and the world around me, they’ve made such a difference. I’m so glad you enjoyed the haiku too.
