Which relationship has taught you the most about yourself?
My first thought when I read this question was:
Music. 🎶💜
I know WordPress probably means a relationship with another person, but apparently I’m interpreting the questions my own way again.
Music has had a relationship with me for most of my life.
It has been there when I was happy.
It has been there when I was grieving.
It has given me somewhere to put anger, sadness, love, memories and things I couldn’t always explain in ordinary words.
For many years, music was something I listened to.
Something I danced to.
Something I played.
Something that helped me through difficult moments.
But eventually, something changed.
I started creating it.
Writing lyrics and turning those words into songs taught me things about myself I hadn’t completely understood before.
I discovered that feelings I struggled to speak about could become verses.
Memories could become melodies.
Pain could become something creative.
And sometimes something that began in sadness could become beautiful.
Music taught me that I still had a voice.
Perhaps I’d had it all along.
I simply needed to find another way to use it. 💜
But if WordPress insists that a “relationship” must involve actual people…
Then my answer would be my children and my husband.
My children have taught me more about myself than I could ever fit into one blog post.
They’ve taught me patience, fear, unconditional love, worry, pride, forgiveness and the extraordinary ability to function when completely exhausted.
They’ve also taught me that you can raise children in the same home and somehow end up with completely different human beings.
Each one teaches you something new.
And my husband has taught me something different again.
Over all our years together, I’ve learned about partnership, friendship, loyalty, compromise and what it means to have someone beside you through the ordinary days as well as the difficult ones.
Relationships also hold up mirrors.
Sometimes they show us our strengths.
Sometimes they show us where we need to grow.
Sometimes they show us boundaries we should have created years ago.
And sometimes they simply remind us who we are.
So perhaps I can’t choose only one.
My family has taught me about love.
Life has taught me about strength.
But music?
Music taught me how to turn what was inside me into something I could finally hear. 🎶💜
And I’m still learning.
