The Gamble of the Blank Page

I opened the old tome,
running my fingers across pages
filled with someone else’s words.

I began to read,
then stopped.

Sometimes we spend so long
listening to other voices
that we forget the sound
of our own.

I began to think
about everything I wanted to say,
and all the sentences
that refused to come.

Perhaps I was simply tired.

Or perhaps writing has always been
a process of waiting,
questioning,
crossing things out,
and beginning again.

We want every line to be original,
every thought meaningful,
every page worth reading.

But creation doesn’t work that way.

Sometimes you have to change direction
halfway through the story.

Sometimes you must abandon
the sentence you loved
because another one is trying to breathe.

And sometimes
you have to stop playing safe.

Every blank page is a gamble.

You never know whether the words
will become a poem,
a story,
a song—

or simply a page you tear out tomorrow.

But you write anyway.

Because somewhere between
the first uncertain word
and the final full stop,

you may discover something
you weren’t trying to find:

your own voice. 💜
