When Music Remembers
Sometimes all it takes is one song.
The first notes begin, and before I can swallow the lump forming in my throat, something inside me shifts.
My senses remember before my mind does.
A place.
A face.
A moment.
I couldn’t find it deliberately if I tried, yet music reaches into some hidden corner of memory and brings it back as though no time has passed at all.
One melody can tag an entire chapter of our lives.
Then comes that strange swelling in the chest—the feeling that has no proper name. For a moment, the present pales beside the memory.
It is almost a kind of delirium, where yesterday and today overlap.
Perhaps that is music’s spell.
A guitar chord can return us to a summer decades ago. A voice can bring back someone we miss. A dance track can put us beneath flashing lights again, while a quiet piano can reopen a memory we thought had faded.
And sometimes there is no memory at all.
Only a knowing.
A feeling that the song understands something we haven’t yet found the words to explain.
Like a distant bell, it rings somewhere deep inside and says:
Here. This is what you were trying to feel.
And we just listen.
Because some stories aren’t remembered in words.
They are remembered in music.
