The Deep End

Evelyn had spent sixty years avoiding the deep end.

As a child, she’d clung to the rail while others jumped, laughing.

Later came other edges—love, travel, dreams—and she approached those cautiously too.

“Maybe next year” became her favourite sentence.

Now her granddaughter stood beside the pool.

“Come on, Gran.”

“I’m too old.”

“You said that last year.”

Evelyn laughed. Fair point.

She removed her sandals and stepped to the edge.

“Will you catch me?”

Her granddaughter grinned.

“No. But I’ll jump with you.”

They held hands.

For once, Evelyn didn’t say maybe.

She said, “Three, two, one…”

My youngest granddaughter is fearless about water. When she was less than five and had finished a course of swim classes, her teacher asked what she wanted to do. She said she wanted to go off the high dive. At her age, it looked huge. When she got there, she hesitated, but the whistle blew for everyone to get out of the pool. She thought it meant she couldn’t turn around so she jumped. Her teacher was in the water waiting for her and she was fine. She was very proud of herself.

What a wonderful story, James! 💜 I can just imagine how enormous that high dive must have looked to someone under five. And I love that she misunderstood the whistle and decided there was no turning back. 😂 Sometimes courage arrives when we think we’ve run out of other options. I bet she was incredibly proud of herself afterwards!

    Well done gran!

In my native language we say “gbe onye tetera bu ututu ya.”

Meaning “When one wakes up, that becomes their own morning”. Grandma woke up to swimming when mind and body were in synch.

Thank you so much 💜 I love that saying — “When one wakes up, that becomes their own morning.” What a beautiful thought. Evelyn may have waited sixty years, but when her moment finally came, it was exactly the right morning for her. It’s never too late to take that leap. 💜

That’s great that her granddaughter finally convinced her to make the leap. Hopefully it’ll be the first of many.

Thank you, David 💜 I like to think it will be. Once Evelyn discovers that taking the leap isn’t nearly as frightening as imagining it, there may be no stopping her! Perhaps she has sixty years of “maybe next year” to catch up on. 😂

I love this. And it’s true how grandchildren can bring new experiences to their elders. The wonders of life…

Thank you so much 💜 And I agree. We often think of grandparents as the ones teaching the younger generation, but grandchildren can open doors for us too — sometimes simply by seeing the world with fewer fears. The wonders of life indeed.
