Three Things Challenge #MM554
Today’s three words:
ANISEED•ANNUL•ANNUAL

The Great Biscuit Disqualification 🍪😂
Every year, our village held an annual baking competition.
Every year, I promised myself I wouldn’t enter.
And every year, somebody said, “Oh, go on, Maggie. It’ll be fun.”
That was how I found myself in the kitchen, staring at a recipe for traditional biscuits.
The recipe called for aniseed.
I opened the cupboard.
No aniseed.
I checked the spice drawer.
Still no aniseed.
I considered driving to the shop, but I was already wearing my oldest slippers, and Bella had settled comfortably across my feet.
“Vanilla will do,” I told her.
Bella offered no objection.
The biscuits came out beautifully golden. I arranged them on a plate and carried them to the competition, feeling rather pleased with myself.
The judge took one bite.
“These are delicious!”
I smiled.
“But where’s the aniseed?”
“Ah.”
He consulted his clipboard.
“I’m afraid the rules state that the biscuits must contain aniseed.”
“Even if they taste better without it?”
He gave me a sympathetic look. “I may have to annul your entry.”
I stared at him.
“Over a missing seed?”
“Those are the rules.”
I picked up my plate.
“Fair enough. More biscuits for me.”
By the time I reached the door, three other contestants had followed me.
“Are you sharing?” one asked.
“Of course.”
We sat outside with coffee and polished off the entire plate.
I didn’t win a ribbon.
But I did receive three requests for the recipe.
Next year, I’m entering the competition with a packet of aniseed in my pocket. Whether it goes into the biscuits is another matter entirely.
