If you had to switch lives with a fictional character for a week, who would you choose?
Oh, this is a dangerous question to ask someone who loves books and fantasy.
There are so many fictional worlds I’d love to visit, but if I could actually switch lives with a character for one week, I think I’d choose Sol Angelica from Margit Sandemo’s The Legend of the Ice People.
I’ve loved those books for decades, and Sol has always fascinated me.
She’s fierce, independent, curious and not particularly interested in being told what she can or cannot do.
She has a wild side, a connection to the mysterious, and a determination to follow her own path.
I suspect we’d get along rather well.
Imagine spending a week in the world of the Ice People!
The old landscapes, the family secrets, the supernatural mysteries and the possibility of discovering things that ordinary people never get to see.
Of course, there’s one small problem.
Sol’s life isn’t exactly a relaxing holiday.
There would probably be danger, trouble and a considerable chance of finding myself somewhere I absolutely shouldn’t be.
And knowing my curiosity, I’d probably be the one saying:
“What’s behind that door?”
Five minutes later:
“Oh. That’s why nobody opens that door.”
But I wouldn’t choose her life because it was easy.
I’d choose it for the chance to experience her world, understand her extraordinary gifts and see things through her eyes.
And after seven days?
I’d happily return to my own life, my family and my animals.
Although I might need a little time to recover from the adventure.
And a very large coffee.
Besides, I have five cats, Bella and Oscar waiting at home.
I can’t leave them unsupervised for too long.
Oscar would probably have proposed marriage to another black shoe by the time I returned. 🤣
