What’s the longest book you’ve ever read?
Hmm…
That’s actually difficult to answer because I’ve read a lot of books over the years, and I can’t say I’ve ever chosen them according to how many pages they had.
But one of the longest books I remember reading is Papillon by Henri Charrière.
And it’s certainly not a light little bedtime story.
It’s a huge adventure about imprisonment, survival, repeated escape attempts and one man’s determination to regain his freedom.
I remember being completely pulled into it.
That’s the funny thing about long books.
If the story is good enough, you don’t really notice that you’re reading hundreds and hundreds of pages.
You simply keep turning them.
I’ve always been like that with books.
Once a story has caught me, I’m in.
And I’m finishing it.
Actually, WordPress recently asked me about books I hadn’t finished, and I struggled with that question because abandoning a book isn’t something I normally do.
Apparently I have commitment issues in reverse.
Once I’ve opened the book, we’re in this relationship until the final page. 🤣
And then, of course, there is my beloved Legend of the Ice People by Margit Sandemo.
Individual books in the series aren’t enormous, but there are 47 of them.
I’ve read the entire series more than once, so if WordPress is willing to accept accumulated mileage…
I think I deserve some sort of literary endurance medal. 🤣
Maybe that’s why I don’t really think of books as long or short.
I think of them as:
Did the story make me want to know what happened next?
If the answer is yes, the number of pages doesn’t matter very much.
Give me a good story, a comfortable place, some peace and quiet and preferably a cup of coffee…
And I’ll keep turning pages.
