September — Day 16
Have you ever had a health scare?
Yes. My most recent one has been my heart. ❤️
A few weeks before my planned hernia operation, I ended up in emergency with trouble breathing and pressure in my chest.
They ran tests, but nothing showed up that explained what I was feeling.
Then in January, as part of the preparations for my operation, I had more testing done. That’s when they discovered something I hadn’t known about — a problem with the electrical conduction system of my heart called a bifascicular block.
I’ve always had a naturally low pulse and low blood pressure, and the cardiologist told me that, because of that history, I may have had the conduction problem for quite some time without knowing it.
My hernia operation eventually took place in March, but things were a little different now.
A cardiologist was there during the operation specifically to monitor my heart.
I must admit, there’s something rather unsettling about going in to have one part of your body repaired while knowing there’s a cardiologist standing by watching another part. 👀❤️
For now, my heart needs to be monitored. A bifascicular block doesn’t automatically mean I’ll need treatment, but if the electrical conduction worsens in the future, a pacemaker may become necessary.
Finding out was frightening, especially after I’d already been to emergency with symptoms and the earlier tests hadn’t revealed it.
But there’s another way I can look at it:
Now we know it’s there.
It can be watched. If anything changes, my doctors know what they’re dealing with.
I can’t spend my life worrying about whether my heart will need a little electrical assistance one day. I’ll cross that bridge if I ever reach it.
Until then…
Still here.
Still beating.
Still grateful.
Still me. ❤️💜
