First Date Rules

Emma knew the date was going well when Jack looked at the hotdog and said,

“Do you think we’re supposed to eat this with spoons?”

She stared at him.

The hotdog sat proudly in an ice-cream sundae glass, bun and all.

Two spoons had been provided.

“I think this is a test,” she whispered.

“A test of what?”

“Compatibility.”

Jack nodded solemnly. “Then we mustn’t fail.”

He picked up his spoon.

Emma did the same.

At the next table, a woman stopped eating to watch.

Jack attempted the first bite.

The sausage rolled.

The bun tipped sideways.

Mustard landed on his sleeve.

Emma burst out laughing.

“Your turn,” he said.

She carefully wedged her spoon underneath the bun. For approximately three seconds, everything looked promising.

Then the entire hotdog launched itself out of the glass and landed on the table.

They stared at it.

The woman at the next table applauded.

Emma laughed so hard she could barely breathe.

“Five-second rule?” Jack suggested.

“It’s on the table!”

“Ten-second rule?”

“Absolutely not.”

Jack looked toward the food stand.

“Should we order another?”

Emma shook her head. “Only if they give us a knife and fork.”

“That feels like cheating.”

“Says the man wearing mustard.”

He looked down at his sleeve.

“Fair point.”

They bought another hotdog.

This time they ignored the spoons completely, picked it up with their hands and divided it between them.

Much easier.

Twenty-seven years later, on their wedding anniversary, Jack placed an ice-cream sundae glass on the kitchen table.

Inside was a hotdog.

Beside it were two spoons.

Emma stared at him.

“You remembered?”

“How could I forget?”

She picked up her spoon.

Jack grinned.

“Ready?”

“No.”

“Good.”

And somewhere between the first flying sausage and twenty-seven years of memories, they discovered they still hadn’t learned how to eat a hotdog with a spoon.

But they had become very good at laughing together. ❤️

Nice story, Maggie. The only way you can eat a hotdog with a spoon is by cutting the frankfurter and bun into bite-sized pieces and scooping them up.

Now where would be the fun in doing it the sensible way? Then we wouldn’t have had a flying hotdog, mustard on the sleeve 😂
