The Witness Who Wasn’t There

This week’s Story Starter teaser is:
The accident wasn’t her fault.
Fandango’s Story Starter #263

The Witness Who Wasn’t There
The accident wasn’t her fault.
That was what the old woman kept telling her.
The problem was, nobody else could see the old woman.
Every night since the crash, she appeared in the passenger seat—same grey coat, same silver hair, same calm voice.
“You didn’t make him cross the centre line.”
Police said there had been no witnesses. The other driver was dead. Her memory stopped seconds before impact, leaving only headlights, screaming brakes, and the sickening crunch of metal.
Then one night, she finally asked the question she had been afraid to ask.
“How do you know?”
The old woman turned towards her.
For the first time, she smiled.
“Because I was sitting beside him.”
