When the Storm Went Quiet
The storm didn’t scare me —
the silence after did.
I had listened to thunder tear open the sky,
watched lightning turn midnight into day.
Rain hammered against the windows
while the wind screamed through the trees.
I knew those sounds.
They were wild,
but they were honest.
Then suddenly—
nothing.
No rain tapping against the glass.
No branches scratching the roof.
No distant rumble retreating toward the sea.
Even the night creatures had stopped singing.
I opened the door.
The earth smelled of rain and broken leaves.
Clouds still twisted above me,
but the air had become strangely still.
Too still.
Then I noticed something else.
The puddles were perfectly motionless.
Not a ripple.
Not even when I stepped into one.
I looked down.
My reflection stared back at me.
And smiled.
I hadn’t.
Behind me, somewhere inside the house,
the floorboard creaked.
The storm hadn’t frightened me.
But suddenly, I wished it would come back.
