What’s a moment when you realized you were officially an adult?
I can’t point to one particular moment and say:
There. That’s when I became an adult.
For me, it was a collection of moments.
I’ve been very independent for most of my life, and some of that independence came earlier than it probably should have.
I moved away from home when I was sixteen.
There was alcohol abuse and other things happening within the family that weren’t healthy for me, and leaving became the best choice I could make for myself.
By nineteen, I had trained as a children’s nurse.
I originally worked in hospitals, but I quickly discovered something about myself.
I couldn’t cope with watching children die.
You can be trained for the practical side of caring for someone, but there are some things no textbook can prepare your heart for.
So I changed direction and specialised in working with children with special needs in schools and similar settings.
Then, at twenty, I became a mother.
Perhaps that was another enormous step into adulthood—but even then, I don’t think there was some magical moment when I suddenly thought:
Well, that’s it. I’m officially a grown-up now. 😂
Looking back, adulthood wasn’t a doorway I walked through.
It was something that happened gradually through independence, responsibility, difficult choices, work, motherhood, mistakes, love, and simply figuring life out as I went along.
And maybe that’s still happening.
I’m not convinced any of us completely figure out this adult business.
Some of us just become much better at pretending we know what we’re doing. 😂💜
Growing up isn’t one moment. It’s a thousand little moments that quietly shape who we become.
