Your challenge for this week
He left behind a note with only three words, and none of them were goodbye.
Trigger warning
This is self biological.
Missy’s MAD Challenge # 105
Three Words I Needed
#missysmadchallenge
He left behind no note.
That was part of what made it so difficult.
I was seventeen.
At seventeen, you don’t understand the darkness another person may be carrying. You only search through your last conversations, your last words, every disagreement and every moment you think you should have noticed.
And I blamed myself.
For a long time, I wondered what I had done wrong.
What I should have said.
What I should have seen.
What I could have changed.
If only he had left me a note.
It wouldn’t have needed an explanation.
It wouldn’t have needed pages of reasons or one final goodbye.
I wish he had left just three words:
Not your fault.
Three words for the seventeen-year-old girl who would spend far too long looking backwards.
Three words telling her she hadn’t caused the darkness she couldn’t see.
Three words that might have stopped her from searching herself for an answer that wasn’t there.
I know that now.
But seventeen-year-old me didn’t.
She only knew that someone she had cared about was suddenly gone, and somehow she convinced herself that she should have been able to prevent it.
So perhaps, after all these years, I can finally write the note he never did.
Not from him.
From me, to her.
Not your fault.
And this time,
I hope she believes it.
