Day 10 — What’s a small habit your partner had that turned you off?
I’m going to turn this question around a little.
When I finally got away from my ex-husband, I was broken in ways I didn’t completely understand yet. One of the habits I carried with me was saying “sorry” for everything.
Sorry if I spoke.
Sorry if I needed something.
Sorry if I disagreed.
Sorry if I took up space.
Sometimes it felt as though I was apologising simply for existing.
Then I met the man who would become my now husband.
Instead of being annoyed by that habit, he slowly taught me that I didn’t have to apologise for being myself. I was allowed to have opinions. I was allowed to make mistakes. I was allowed to say no. I was allowed to exist without asking anyone’s permission.
It took time to unlearn something that had become almost automatic.
So perhaps the biggest lesson I learned entering a new relationship wasn’t about discovering a habit in someone else that made me want to leave.
It was discovering a habit in myself that I no longer needed in order to survive.
And learning that love should never make you feel that you have to apologise for existing.
