What’s the best local dish you’ve ever eaten while traveling?
This one is easy.
Ropa vieja. 😋
I fell in love with it the first time I tasted it.
When we came to the Canary Islands, discovering the local food was part of discovering a new culture, and ropa vieja quickly became one of my favourites.
The Canarian version is a wonderfully comforting mixture of meat, chickpeas, potatoes, vegetables, and spices.
And then there’s the name.
Ropa vieja literally means “old clothes.” 😂
Not exactly the most appetising name for a dish!
But apparently the name comes from the shredded meat resembling old, torn clothing—which makes slightly more sense once you see it.
For me, food is one of the loveliest ways to experience a place.
You can visit monuments, explore landscapes, and learn about history, but sitting down and eating something that generations of local families have cooked brings you into another part of their culture.
With love, coffee, poetry, and stardust,
