The Afterlove (Updated)

A year ago, I wrote about a song that gave me a word for something I had been trying to describe.

Afterlove.

The other day marked one year since I opened this blog — rather spectacularly, apparently, because looking back I didn’t gently open the door. I kicked it off its hinges. 😂

But today I want to go back to something deeper.

Why The Afterlove Voice?

It began with Liam ( Payne).

It began with grief, questions, music, synchronicities and my own spiritual experiences after his death. Then one night Spotify recommended a song called Afterlove by Mason Watts.

Something about that word stopped me.

Because it described what I was already experiencing.

Afterlove isn’t simply loving someone after they’re gone.

For me, Afterlove is what love becomes when it can no longer exist in the form it once did.

It is remembrance.

It is carrying someone’s influence forward.

It is hearing a piece of music and being transported instantly.

It is grief changing shape without love disappearing.

It is creating something because somebody mattered.

And, through my own spiritual beliefs, it is my sense that love and connection can reach beyond what we can physically see.

That’s where The Afterlove Voice was born.

At first, I thought that voice existed primarily to speak about Liam.

A year later, I understand it differently.

The Afterlove Voice is also mine.

It writes poetry.

It tells stories.

It makes music.

It laughs at ridiculous prompts and, occasionally, wombats. 😂

It remembers.

It questions.

It loves.

And yes, it still speaks Liam’s name.

The blog grew beyond what I imagined on that first day, but the name never stopped fitting.

Perhaps it fits me better now than it did then.

Because Afterlove isn’t only about what comes after death.

Sometimes it’s about what comes after everything that tried to silence you.

And the voice you discover on the other side.

That is why I am The Afterlove Voice. 💜

Maggie, this is such a beautiful reflection on how something born from grief can grow into something so much bigger.
I love how you’ve redefined “afterlove” – not as an ending, but as everything love continues to become. And I’m especially glad that somewhere along the way, your voice became your own. Here’s to the next year of poetry, stories, music, ridiculous prompts, and of course, the occasional wombat! 😂💜
