Poetics: But no, a butterfly

Messengers

A Monarch rested where sorrow had been sitting, as if grief itself had grown delicate wings.

A Painted Lady drifted through morning light, asking nothing except that I notice.

Then came the Mourning Cloak, dark as remembered tears, yet carrying the promise that endings are only another shape of becoming.

Since then, I never call them ordinary butterflies.

Some arrive with colours.

Others arrive with answers.

Beautiful, mystical messengers! Such lovely imagery, too. I especially like, “dark as remembered tears.”

Oh yes Maggie, loved the accompanying imagery and beautiful stanzas for each butterfly. Funny how each name already evokes certain characteristics. I also loved the format you used with the poem in the framework of the imagery. A most excellent poem, 🦋🩵🦋

A delightful response, Maggie! I love the thought of grief itself growing delicate wings and endings being ‘only another shape of becoming’. We’ve had so many butterflies in our garden this year – I’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Reminds me of beliefs that the first butterfly of spring can be a harbinger of certain things… the mourning cloak especially
